Awards and Recognitions in the PWHL

The Premier Hockey Federation's (PWHL) recent awards ceremony celebrated the exceptional talents and achievements within the league. This year, the spotlight was firmly on Toronto's Natalie Spooner, who was named both the PWHL MVP and Forward of the Year.

Natalie Spooner's Remarkable Season

Spooner led the league in scoring, netting an impressive 20 goals and adding seven assists to her tally. Her stellar performance on the ice allowed her to outperform notable players like New York's Alex Carpenter and Montreal's Marie-Philip Poulin.

What makes Spooner's season even more remarkable is the context in which she achieved these feats. Spooner gave birth to her son at the end of 2022 and did not skate for six months leading up to the season. Her return to top form, culminating in such high honors, is a testament to her dedication and resilience.

"I probably wouldn't have thought that it would have gone this way," Spooner admitted. "I think I was just super grateful to be playing again, to be back on the team. I was just really excited to get back out there with the girls, but I never thought that I'd be able to have, I guess, as big of an impact as I was able to have with the team."

Despite suffering a knee injury during the playoff semifinals, Spooner's impact throughout the season was undeniable and her accolades well-deserved.

Troy Ryan: Coach of the Year

Toronto's success this season was not only due to Spooner's exceptional performance but also to the strategic acumen of their coach, Troy Ryan. Leading Toronto to a league-high 47 points during the regular season and steering the team through an 11-game win streak, Ryan was deservingly named the Coach of the Year.

Kristen Campbell: Goaltender of the Year

Toronto's defensive strength was epitomized by their goaltender, Kristen Campbell. Campbell's stellar performance between the pipes earned her the title of Goaltender of the Year. She recorded 16 wins and three shutouts, proving instrumental in her team's success.

Defensive Honors: Erin Ambrose

Not to be overlooked, Montreal's Erin Ambrose was named Defender of the Year. Ambrose accumulated 18 points over the course of 24 games, showcasing her strong defensive skills and contributing significantly to her team's overall performance.

Rookie of the Year: Grace Zumwinkle

Minnesota’s Grace Zumwinkle earned the Rookie of the Year title, recording an impressive 19 points in 24 games. Zumwinkle's debut season in the PWHL showcased her potential and marked her as a player to watch in the coming seasons.

Hockey For All Award: Maureen Murphy

In addition to the on-ice accolades, Maureen Murphy was honored with the Hockey For All Award for her exceptional volunteer work. Murphy's contributions off the ice have made a significant impact, highlighting the importance of community and volunteerism within the PWHL.

Selection Process

The winners of these prestigious awards were chosen by an 18-member selection committee, ensuring a rigorous and fair evaluation process. The committee's decisions reflect the outstanding talent and dedication of each recipient, underscoring the depth of skill and commitment within the league.

The PWHL's awards ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the collective effort and passion that drive women's hockey forward. As the league continues to grow, the accomplishments of players like Natalie Spooner, coaches like Troy Ryan, and community leaders like Maureen Murphy set a high standard for excellence on and off the ice.
