The Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up their final practice session ahead of their much-anticipated preseason opener. The team enjoyed a break from the inclement weather, which cleared just in time for an uninterrupted 75-minute session, marking their double-digit practice milestone.
However, not all news was favorable for the Eagles. Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson missed his second consecutive practice due to a shoulder injury. Joining him on the sidelines were linebacker Oren Burks, missing his ninth straight session with a knee issue, and wide receiver Parris Campbell, safety Mekhi Garner, and linebacker Brandon Smith, each out for their fourth straight practice. These absences have cast doubt over their availability for the upcoming preseason game.
Despite these setbacks, the practice session revealed some promising developments. Zack Baun and Devin White led the linebacker unit, with James Bradberry and Reed Blankenship taking charge at the safety positions. The cornerback slots were patrolled by Isaiah Rodgers and Darius Slay, while Quinyon Mitchell stepped into the role of first-team slot cornerback.
In the offensive lineup, Grant Calcaterra stood out with a touchdown catch from quarterback Jalen Hurts and an impressive 25-yard reception. Calcaterra also made a noteworthy slant pass catch from Kenny Pickett, showcasing his versatility and reliability as a receiver. Darius Slay demonstrated his defensive prowess by breaking up a deep pass from Hurts intended for Joseph Ngata.
The offensive line also saw some key performances. Lane Johnson successfully neutralized Brandon Graham's rush on three consecutive plays during the 11-on-11 situations, giving Hurts crucial time in the pocket. Mekhi Becton held firm as the first-team right guard, solidifying his place in the starting lineup. Unfortunately, Tyler Steen was sidelined due to an ankle injury, adding to the team's current injury woes.
Among the wide receivers, Britain Covey showed potential by making a solid catch on an out route against defenders Tristin McCollum and Andre' Sam. On the defensive side, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. received accolades from teammate Zack Baun after a critical defensive stop. "Good eyes, Trot! Good eyes!" Baun was heard praising, highlighting the collaborative and supportive atmosphere within the team.
Moro Ojomo has been making waves with his consistent ability to generate interior pressure over the past four practices. His efforts may see him rising as the fourth defensive tackle behind the trio of Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Milton Williams.
The practice session also featured some standout moments from Austin Watkins, who made a diving catch and a significant gain against cornerback Josh Jobe. Watkins' performance will be closely monitored as rosters are evaluated and decisions are made moving forward.
All eyes are now on the preseason opener, a critical juncture in assessing the depth and readiness of this Eagles squad. With key players out and others stepping up, the game will be an important test of the team’s resilience and preparedness for the upcoming season.
