Cricket Scotland has been thrust into turmoil following revelations concerning Khizar Ali, a board member, and his historical social media activity. Tweets from 2012 have come to light in which Ali used derogatory language, including the "P" word directed at Pakistanis, as well as other offensive comments aimed at Indians.
Cricket Scotland Launches Investigation
In response to these disturbing findings, Cricket Scotland has initiated a formal investigation. The organization, which has been striving to foster an inclusive and discrimination-free environment, now faces a daunting challenge. This comes on the heels of extensive structural changes following an independent investigation last year that revealed a staggering 448 instances of institutional racism within the sport's governance in Scotland. The conclusion of that investigation led to a complete overhaul of Cricket Scotland's board.
Khizar Ali, who joined the board in May 2023 as a regional representative, is now under scrutiny not just from Cricket Scotland but also from the advocacy group Running out Racism, with which Ali has had significant involvement. Running out Racism, calling for an urgent investigation, expressed their dismay and disappointment at Ali's use of such offensive language, despite their noted respect for him.
Khizar Ali Responds
Ali has addressed the backlash head-on. "There were recent screenshots shared of historic tweets from 2012 where I used the P word. The reading of the word in full for some within the South Asian and cricketing communities will invoke and trigger upset. To anyone who has to read that and it caused upset, I want to extend my sincere apologies to you," Ali said, acknowledging the pain his words have caused.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Ali also pointed out that some of the tweets being circulated have been taken out of context. "There are also various other tweets which are being shared out of context of the conversation they sit within, and I am willing to commit to any discussions directly with anyone who has any concerns on these, as I have already with a number of colleagues," he added.
Commitment to Zero-Tolerance
Cricket Scotland, represented by a spokesperson, reiterated its commitment to eradicating any form of discrimination within the sport. "The board of Cricket Scotland was completely changed last year after an independent investigation found the governance of the game in Scotland to be institutionally racist. We are committed to ensuring that our sport is safe, welcoming, inclusive, and open to all. We are determined to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to racism, sexism, and all forms of unacceptable behaviour," the spokesperson declared.
Running out Racism, while expressing their shock and disappointment, acknowledged Ali's willingness to confront the issue and his proactive engagement. “Running out Racism members are surprised, dismayed and feel incredibly let down that someone we've a huge amount of respect for would use such words, in any context, at any point in history. This has caused upset and anger with some we support and represent, it is difficult at this stage to work beyond how people feel in the immediate term. However, we do acknowledge Khizar’s willingness to proactively own this, and appreciate the conversations he's engaged in directly with us and many others regarding these messages,” said a spokesperson for the advocacy group.
Continuing to Address Past and Present Racism
The ongoing investigation signals Cricket Scotland’s recognition of the gravity of Ali’s past actions and reflects the organization's broader commitment to address both historical and contemporary issues of racism head-on. The organization’s current leadership is keenly aware that their mission to create a truly inclusive environment within Scottish cricket is far from complete. This episode involving a board member only underscores the necessity of continued vigilance and concrete actions against all forms of discrimination.
The path forward for Cricket Scotland involves not only meticulous scrutiny of its board members but also a relentless pursuit of policies and practices that uphold the values of respect, diversity, and inclusivity. Keeping the sport free from intolerance and prejudice is crucial not just for the integrity of the game but also for its growth and acceptance in communities across Scotland and beyond.
In conclusion, the sports world will be closely watching how Cricket Scotland handles this controversy, with many hoping it serves as a catalyst for deeper and more comprehensive efforts against racism in the sport.
