New England Patriots Bolster Offensive Line with Onwenu's Versatility
This offseason, the New England Patriots made a significant move by securing Mike Onwenu to a three-year, $57 million contract. Onwenu, an integral part of the Patriots' offensive line, has demonstrated his adaptability and skill across multiple positions since being selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Entering the league as a right tackle, Onwenu quickly solidified his role during his rookie season. His performance at right tackle was remarkable, but his flexibility became even more crucial in his second year when he adeptly handled duties at both right and left tackle. This positional adaptability showcased Onwenu's intrinsic value to the Patriots.
In 2022, the Patriots shifted Onwenu to right guard, where he spent the majority of the season. By the end of the season, he was back at right tackle, a testament to his readiness and versatility. This year, during Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and the mandatory minicamp, the Patriots continued to optimize their offensive line, with Onwenu switching roles as necessary.
During a notable practice session, Onwenu resumed his duties at right tackle, only to transition back to right guard during the first practice of training camp. This fluid movement across positions is a calculated strategy by the Patriots, aimed at identifying and deploying their best offensive lineup.
"It was essentially just practice in a few places," Onwenu explained. "Days in and days out, we're going to be switching around, and it's going to be different lines, so just getting the best five out there and practicing, every guy practicing each position, and just knowing that you can play that position."
Strategic Adjustments in the Trenches
Head Coach Jerod Mayo echoed Onwenu's sentiments about flexibility and preparation. "I've had this conversation with AVP [Alex Van Pelt]. I've also talked to Mike and the rest of those offensive linemen. Look, we're going to put the best five players out there on the field as an offensive line. If that means you've got to play guard or play tackle, I don't know. We'll see, it'll play itself out in camp. That's my mindset, it's about putting the best players on the field."
The Patriots' deliberate strategy of rotating players aims to unearth the most effective combination, a process that Mayo believes will solidify as training camp progresses. This approach is not without its share of surprises, even for the players.
"It was a little surprising," Onwenu admitted. "Pretty much as a football player, I've done it in the past. I started as a guard, started as a jumbo tackle, and then I played tackle. It's just one of the positions that I play."
On the practice field, other key components of the Patriots' offensive line were equally dynamic. Calvin Anderson took the right tackle position during one practice session, while Chukwuma Okorafor anchored the left tackle spot. The left guard position was manned by Sidy Sow, with David Andrews holding steady at center. Such lineup versatility not only keeps the team nimble but also prepares them for unforeseen challenges during the regular season.
Looking Forward
For Onwenu, the importance of these rotations cannot be overstated. "It is very important. It's early now so we had the OTAs, we had the spring, but we're getting into live football now. As the practices and the days go on, we'll see who fits where and how that fits with the best five."
This continuous evaluation and adaptation aim to ensure that the Patriots will have a formidable and cohesive offensive line when the regular season commences. By meticulously placing each player in positions that leverage their strengths, the Patriots are preparing for a resilient and versatile offensive front capable of providing quarterbacks like Jacoby Brissett the protection they need.
The New England Patriots' strategic foresight and methodical approach to building their offensive line underscore their commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the NFL. With Mike Onwenu anchoring their efforts, this upcoming season holds promise for a solidified and robust offensive unit.
