Attending Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, New York, Kiyan has been a standout player, attracting the attention of major college basketball programs. His list of potential colleges includes heavyweights such as Auburn, USC, Florida State, Ohio State, Rutgers, and Syracuse. Despite the immense pressure and anticipation surrounding his final decision, Kiyan remains focused on making the choice that best suits his personal and athletic development.
On his connection to Syracuse, a storied program led to national prominence by his father in 2003, Kiyan shared, “[My father] never pushes me to go to Syracuse just because his name is on the gym. He did so much at Syracuse. He knows that I'm my own person. I've just got to make my own decision at the end of the day.” Carmelo Anthony, who played a pivotal role in securing the 2003 national championship for Syracuse as a freshman, has also contributed significantly to the university’s basketball facilities, an institution that now bears his name. Despite this deep connection, Kiyan emphasizes his need to evaluate all options and decide on a college program that aligns with his goals and aspirations.
“Even though I know basically the whole world wants me to go to Syracuse, I still haven't made the decision yet and I still have to talk to the coaches some more and really get into detail -- like what other players are coming, how they want me to play, how I'll be coached and stuff like that,” Kiyan explained. These statements underscore the meticulous process he is undertaking in choosing the right collegiate path, a decision that he does not take lightly.
Beyond the glitz and glamour often associated with being the son of an NBA legend, Kiyan’s journey is deeply rooted in the support and sacrifices of his family, particularly his mother. "I would say everybody sees when the cameras are on [my dad] and then they're on me because I'm playing good, but I would say my mom does a lot more background stuff," he said. "Like, when I'm going through something or I need somebody to talk to, my mom is definitely the person." He further added, "And she's the one who really pushes me to get in the gym, even if I don't want to. To go to school and stay on top of my grades and stuff like that." It's clear that the foundational support from his mother has played a critical role in his development, both as a player and an individual.
Despite the spotlight and the expectations, Kiyan remains humble and grounded, often thinking of ways to uplift those around him. "My friends maybe not having the same opportunities as I have, I'm the one that's tried to bring them along with me," he said. "I don't want to make them feel left out." This past April, Kiyan showcased his talent by scoring 15 points at the legendary Rucker Park, a performance that further solidified his status as a rising star in the high school basketball arena. Yet, as he continues to impress on the court, the young athlete acknowledges the importance of the road ahead. "So I still have to finish up my visits, and then, ultimately, just make a decision. I will rely on my parents a lot with their advice and how they think a school fits me," Kiyan noted, highlighting the collaborative approach in his decision-making process.
Finally, while the ties to Syracuse run deep, Kiyan asserts his independence in choosing his path. "If it is Syracuse -- I go there a lot and I practice, I work out there -- if it is that, that's what it is. But he's never going to say, 'You gotta go to Syracuse. You gotta go there because I went there.' He's not going to make me follow in his footsteps unless I really want to,” he emphasized. This pronounced independence serves as a testament to Kiyan’s desire to forge an identity that is authentically his own.
