Kemba Walker Announces Retirement From Professional Basketball
Former lottery pick and four-time All-Star Kemba Walker has announced his retirement from professional basketball, concluding a remarkable career that spanned over a decade. Walker, who spent 12 seasons in the NBA, confirmed his decision on Tuesday. Known for his dazzling ball-handling skills and clutch performances, Walker played for four different franchises during his illustrious career.
Walker was the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, selected by the then-Charlotte Bobcats. During his time with the Bobcats, Walker made three consecutive All-Star appearances and was named to the All-NBA Second Team. He etched his name in NCAA history by leading the UConn Huskies to the 2011 NCAA title, averaging 23.5 points per game that season. Walker's heroics included a game-winning shot to beat Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Big East Tournament.
In the summer of 2019, Walker joined the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade deal that sent Terry Rozier to the Hornets. In his first season with the Celtics, Walker was selected as an All-Star and played a pivotal role in helping the team reach the Eastern Conference finals in the NBA bubble. However, recurring knee soreness and other health issues marred his tenure with the Celtics.
Walker briefly played for the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks before concluding his NBA journey in 2023. Despite these challenges, Walker's career averages of 19.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists over 750 career games reflect his consistent performance and resilience on the court.
Ending his professional playing days overseas, Walker spent a season with AS Monaco before making his decision to retire. However, his passion for the game remains undiminished. Walker will be joining the Charlotte Hornets' staff as a player enhancement coach under new head coach Charles Lee.
Walker's journey wasn't without its difficulties. Reflecting on his departure from the Charlotte Bobcats due to cap space issues, Walker remarked, "Tough days, f---ing tough days, I can't even lie. Excuse my language. It was difficult. I couldn't see myself just being on another team. It was just hard. That's all I've known was Charlotte. Definitely some tough times. I had a feeling that I wasn't going to get the offer that I wanted, and maybe not close to it, because of cap space."
Expressing gratitude towards everyone who supported him throughout his career, Walker said, "I know I couldn't have made it to this point without my incredible support system around me. There are so many people to thank -- my mom, dad and entire family, my teammates who have become family, and the coaches who believe in me and brought out the best in me."
Walker emphasized that basketball will still play a significant role in his life. "Basketball will forever be a part of my life so this isn't goodbye. I'm excited for what's next," he stated.
Kemba Walker's career can be characterized by his remarkable skills, game-changing moments, and dignified perseverance in the face of adversity. As he transitions from playing to coaching, his legacy as a player continues to inspire and influence the basketball community. His journey on the court has indeed been a dream, full of achievements that he, and his fans, will cherish forever.
